Almost every warehouse in the world isn’t complete without hand-operated load-carrying equipment, and trolleys are one of the most fundamental ones. Take the platform (deck) trolley, for example, it’s a rather simple yet versatile piece of equipment that even some of the most complex warehouses depend on. It can be used for both light and heavy-duty tasks without any issues or handling difficulties. Together with a shelving system, platform trolleys are among the most ubiquitous pieces in a storage facility of any kind.
What Matters in a Platform Trolley?

Capacity
The heaviest items you have in your warehouse are what the trolley should be able to handle without being at its maximum load capacity. For instance, if the total weight of the heaviest items in your warehouse is 100 kg, then you should go look for reliable platform trolleys that have a load capacity of around 120 kg.
Material
There are two options to choose from when it comes to the material the trolley can be made of – aluminium and steel. Aluminium trolleys are much lighter and more corrosion-resistant than those made of steel, but they are also more malleable. Steel platform trolleys for sale, on the other hand, are much stronger and heavier, making them more durable and usually with higher load capacities.
Dimensions
The height, width and length of a platform trolley all depend on the bulk and size of the items it needs to move from one point to another on a daily basis. There is no catch here: the larger the trolley, the larger and usually, the heavier the objects you can move with it.
Durability
When it comes to the lifespan of a deck trolley, the material it’s made of isn’t the only factor that determines it. Apart from maintenance, you should take a look at the trolley’s build quality. Are the welds consistent? Is the metal of a high enough grade, or does it have the right protective coating?
Handling
While you’re not getting a new vehicle, a trolley is somewhat similar, since it also has four wheels. The ease of use or how easy it is to manoeuvre the trolley when loaded up says a lot about how quickly you’re going to be able to move stuff around your warehouse.
Handling Platform Trolleys

Force
Platform trolleys for sale are made to be pushed, not pulled, as their handle is positioned at the back two wheels. Make sure to push enough to have the trolley moving with as little force as possible. If you constantly need to readjust your grip or how much you push on it, you need to use more force. If you feel like you can’t turn the trolley without using too much force, then you’re using too much force initially.
Slope
When going up or down a slope with a trolley, you should take it slow and steady and avoid going diagonally across the slope. Keep the load facing downhill so that it doesn’t shift, or when it does, it doesn’t fall on you.
Uneven Surface
When going over uneven surfaces or bumps, you should brace the trolley yourself and slow down before going over them. To slow down, use your body weight, as this helps prevent items from tipping over or the load as a whole from shifting.
Loading
Talking about tipping items, to prevent this from happening, make sure to place heavier ones in the centre. When loading the trolley, place heavier items first, then smaller and lighter, so that the centre of gravity is much lower.
Unloading
When it’s time to unload the items you loaded up on the trolley, starting with the top item, which should be the lightest, is a no-brainer. However, what you should also keep in mind is the fact that when unloading the trolley, you should take care when handling the heaviest items at the bottom. Lift with your back straight and your legs instead.
Benefits of Platform Trolleys
Productivity
The increase in productivity that a platform trolley can bring is immense, as it’s a simple piece of load-carrying equipment that doesn’t take time to learn how to use safely. There is also less downtime with it since simple operations are made even less time-consuming.
Versatility
By having a metal bar as a form of handle and a flat base as a place to put items on, a platform trolley is quite the Swiss army knife of load-carrying equipment. It can be used for almost any type of load as long as the load capacity supports.
Movement
Moving around, even in a small warehouse with a lot of tight turns, is rather easy with a deck trolley. Since it comes in different dimensions, you can get a small enough trolley that is easy to manoeuvre and store too. This makes it ideal for busy workspaces where efficiency matters, allowing staff to transport goods quickly while reducing strain and improving overall workflow.
